Home Page

Well, if you haven't figured it out yet, this is the homepage of Nicholas Alexander Diakopoulos. That's a pretty long, intimidating name, that's why no one calls me that. Just call me "Nick"; alternatively, "Friend". Welcome.

I'm a Ph.D. student here at the Georgia Institute of Technology. My interests currently lie at the intersection of computer graphics, vision, multimedia processing and visualization, and linguistic/semiotic theory.  I'm collaborating with both Irfan Essa and Ramesh Jain and carving out a spot at the intersection of these areas.

My current research projects involve the usage of semantics to guide the synthesis of new media from an existing database of media elements. Recent work in the domain of images focused on the repurposing of photographic content using texture synthesis algorithms. Continuing work incorporates a broader notion of semantically guided synthesis resulting in visual summaries or collages of annotated photographs or videos. The goal is to be able to provide meaningful multimedia visualizations which exploit both the media annotations and metadata as well as the media itself in constructing the visualization. Application of the general ideas to audio and music browsing are also being considered.

I am a member of the Computational Perception Laboratory and the Experiential Systems Group. Make sure you check out their web pages for the latest and greatest projects that we're all working on.
